Salt air and Channel-crossing grime, in one town

Folkestone gets the same sea-air staining as the rest of the coast, plus something the other towns in this ring don't: constant traffic film from being the UK's Channel Tunnel gateway. Different problem, different approach.

Why Folkestone's different

Two dirt problems most towns only get one of

Folkestone sits on the coast like Dover, Deal and Margate, so it gets the same salt-air staining on stonework and render. But it's also the UK end of the Channel Tunnel, which means a steady flow of HGV and coach traffic through Cheriton that the other towns in this ring simply don't see. That combination, sea salt plus road film, is genuinely Folkestone's own.

Why the Channel Tunnel traffic matters

The M20/A20 corridor into the Eurotunnel terminal at Cheriton carries thousands of HGVs and coaches a day. Properties near that corridor and the approach roads pick up diesel particulate and road film on top of normal weathering, a grime type driveways elsewhere in Kent don't have to deal with.

What The Leas' Victorian terraces need

The clifftop terraces along The Leas are largely Victorian and Edwardian render and stonework, built to catch sea views, which also means catching the sea air head-on. Low-pressure soft washing with a biocide treatment protects the original finish rather than stripping it.

Harbour Arm and the seafront

The regenerated Harbour Arm and the beach-facing streets around Sunny Sands get direct salt spray, similar to Dover and Deal, so paving and block paving down here benefit from the same re-sanding and salt-residue treatment we use on the rest of the coast.
